With more reach than ever, Slow Roll Buffalo is set to start its fourth six-month season of free and inclusive community bike rides every Monday and many weekends from May through October.

The fun begins on May 7th, downtown at the Electric Tower, with an afterparty at Big Ditch Brewing Company. The masses move to neighborhoods from there with two new host venues in the Fruit Belt’s Moot Center on May 14th and West Side Community Services on the 21st, followed by Slow Roll’s return to the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park on Memorial Day, May 28th. Other new host venues include both the Broadway and Varsity Theatres along with the Freedom Wall and Iron Island Museum, while perennial favorites such as the Groove Lounge and Irish Center will again be packed with cyclists excited to see the city at a slow and social pace while supporting the local economy. All May-September Monday rides start at 6:30pm; October rides start at 6pm.

Accommodating all skill levels, every Slow Roll offers a new 10-mile, round-trip route guided by a trained squad of more than 100 volunteers, with two “mass-up” stops during which neighborhood stakeholders educate riders on events, history and issues involving their area, while the “Kiddie Kickstand” crew of young entrepreneurs from the African Heritage Food Co-op sell drinks and snacks. Rides run rain or shine – only lightning or similarly severe weather forces cancellation. All bikes are welcome except for gas-guzzlers and training wheels – free, once-annual registration onsite and at online here.

Each route is prepared months in advance by a route scout team, then canvassed daily in the week before the ride by additional squad members who invite residents and offer traffic alerts while reporting road hazards to the city’s 311 service. Advance invitation and notification includes visits, calls and emails to block clubs, businesses and organizations; new elements of outreach this year include daily features here in our news section as well as Roll Call Radio, offering talk and tunes from Slow Roll to the old school every Thursday from 7-8pm on Power 96.5.

Further, Slow Roll will continue to expand its geographic reach with many Friday Pedal Parties and Saturday Bike Stampedes around and beyond Buffalo, with return trips including Niagara Falls and Clarence along with debut rides from Kenmore and Eden, plus charity-driven rides for Roswell Park, Make-a-Wish and Variety. See our schedule section here for the full lineup of free rides.

“We’re excited to roll out our herd on wheels to continue connecting our community,” said Slow Roll Buffalo co-founder Seamus Gallivan. “The bicycle is the best vehicle to bring people together.”

Presented by Independent Health, Slow Roll Buffalo is a program of the nonprofit GObike Buffalo. Founded in Detroit in 2010, Slow Roll has expanded into a global network; the five-year-old Buffalo chapter is by far its largest offshoot.
